JAFA Regency Costume Challenge

We are running both a Costume Challenge and a Competition between now and the 2013 Jane Austen Festival Australia. You can follow our updates by joining our facebook group or pasting the web address of the page you're on right now into http://www.changedetection.com/

1813 Historical Sewing Competition - to celebrate 200 years since the publication of Pride & Prejudice, we are inviting you to enter one or more garments based on 1813 fashion prints or in private or museum collections that are documented as being close to 1813. Each entry must contain documentation, a diary of construction and images of the complete project. More details of entry, guidelines and prizes will be published shortly. The competition closes on the 1 March 2013 and is open to entries from friends in Australia and overseas.

Regency Wardrobe Challenge - there will be no winners or losers - but instead each month or two months the challenge is to make another item of clothing for your regency wardrobe. Entrants must register by email to janeaustenfestival@gmail.com

Requirements:

  • you need to base your garments on fashion plate images, paintings or garments in museum collections - choosing either men's, women's or children's wardrobes.
  • You are to send your garment inspiration images to us, together with your photo and a short paragraph about yourself and your project to post on the web.
  • At the end of each month you are to upload your progress update and photographs to this blog. Make sure that you have been added as an author by contacting janeaustenfestival@gmail.com.
  • You are welcome to use commercial patterns or attempt drafting your own, and are also welcome to use sewing and embroidery machines.
  • We all have budget restraints, so our feeling is that these garments should "look" like you have used natural fibres, whilst participants should make efforts to use natural fibres like cotton, linen and wool.
  • We encourage participants to choose designs that "look" right for the era.
  • You choose what items you are making - have a look at what others have chosen to work on if you are not sure.
  • If you cannot start in May, you still need to submit your plan and pictures in May, but let us know the month you will commence.
  • All entrants in the Regency Wardrobe Challenge will receive a 10% discount off their 2013 Jane Austen Festival Season Pass.
  • International friends of Jane Austen Festival Australia are welcome to participate, and if not attending JAFA 2013 will receive a token of our appreciation.
  • Entrants who are attending the 2013 Jane Austen Festival Australia are invited to take part in our 1790-1830 Fashion Parade on Friday 20 April 2013.

The Challenge commences on the 1 May 2012 and ceases on the 1 March 2013 with two categories:
  1. Full Time: one item a month
  2. Part Time: one item every two months. You are still required to update us at the end of each month on your progress.
